Kanji I: Ta



This may well be one of my favorite kanji, Ta. 'Stranger, other.'

The little piece to the left is the radical for 'person'. The other piece is considerable more interesting. It originally was a spiral depicting a snake or a scorpion. There are two implications - this visual turnings, which convey 'twisted' and thus 'unusual'. Unusual person. The other is danger, unpredictability. Dangerous person. Stranger.
I think it's revealing that the Japanese kanji for stranger has the meaning for 'dangerous'.
